Update BIOS Defaults to Fix TPM Device

A chip device that stores all personal data on your trusted platform module driver (whether it’s a dell laptop or Mac) is TPM. If you receive any pop-up message warning you about an error, i.e., TPM device not detected, it could be due to several reasons.

It could be an incompatible TPM device with your device’s hardware, physical damage to the chip, issues with TPM keys, or network connection errors. An outdated BIOS could also contribute to the ‘TPM device not detected’ error. Updating BIOS settings can help to resolve the error.

Ensure that your device is constantly getting power supply; otherwise, any continuous supply disruption may result in a corrupted motherboard. Here are the steps to update BIOS.

Step 1: Start the process by downloading compatible BIOS for your device from the manufacturer’s website. The downloaded file would be a compressed zip folder.

Step 2: Right-click the compressed folder and select ‘extract all’ from the drop-down menu. It will extract all files. Next, follow the wizard to update BIOS by clicking ‘next.’

Step 3: In the following wizard, carefully read the terms and conditions and check the option of ‘i accept the agreement’ at the bottom. Click ‘next’ to continue.

Step 4: Select the option of ‘install’ and click ‘next’ to complete the action.

Step 5: Complete the wizard by clicking ‘next’ on each wizard.

Step 6: Click ‘install’ followed by selecting ‘finish’ to complete the wizard. Once the update is installed, your device will restart, and the error linked to the TPM device will resolve if associated with the BIOS update.

Enable TPM Driver

If your device shows a ‘TPM device nor detected’ error, it may be due to TPM being disabled on your system. You need to enable the TPM for your device to detect it. Here are the steps to help the TPM device to resolve the error.

Step 1: Start by entering BIOS on your device via shortcut keys, i.e., Delt, F2, or F9. Depending on your device manufacturer, you need to click the keys at startup. Then, in BIOS, select the option of ‘security.’

Step 2: In the next window, search for ‘Intel Platform Trust Technology (IPTT), AMD CPU TPM, or TPM.’ Navigate to the option and ‘enable TPM visibility.’ According to different devices, it could be a checkbox or toggle button, and complete action accordingly. Save the changes and exit BIOS.

Reset BIOS Firmware to Fix TPM Error Message

If updating the BIOS version and enabling TPM firmware in BIOS didn’t work for you, then resetting BIOS can resolve the error ‘TPM device not detected.’ It could be done both automatically and manually. Here are the steps for performing the rollback BIOS option to reset automatically, along with ways to achieve a reset manually.

Step 1: Press the startup key and enter BIOS from shortcut keys (F2 or F10) according to your device.

Step 2: In the BIOS menu, select the option of ‘setup default’ or ‘load setup defaults’/’reset defaults’ according to y

Step 3: IN the next window, your system will configure your device’s default configuration. After confirmation, a BIOS reset is automatically performed. For manual resets, one can reset using jumpers or removing the CMOS.

Update TPM Driver

Using outdated TPM drivers may also result in a ‘TPM device not detected’ error. As TPM (trusted platform module) is a chip-based device, it requires a driver for communication between the device and the operating system. Here are the steps to update the TPM drivers.

Step 1: In the windows main menu, right-click on the windows icon and select the option of ‘device manager’ from the list. Or click the windows key +X on the keyboard to launch the utility.

Step 2: In the window of ‘device manager,’ expand the option of ‘security devices.’

Step 3: Next window will display the linked and attached security devices with your device. Select ‘TPM device’ from the list and right-click to select ‘update drivers’ from the drop-down menu.

Step 4: In the next step, locate the option of ‘Search automatically for driver.’ Your device will now install the compatible updates for TPM drivers to resolve the error.

Step 5: Restart your device to check the visibility and detection of TPM on your computer.

Troubleshoot Network Connection and Laptop Firmware

It could be the faulty internet connection that sometimes disrupts the system and causes the ‘TPM device not detected’ error on your device. In this context, we can use the network connection troubleshooter to check the root cause of the error and fix it accordingly. Troubleshooting also helps prevent the information regarding when you enable TPM, which is saved in ADDs.

Disabling this feature (TPM recovery in ADDS) and running a troubleshooter to check network connection issues may help resolve the error. Here are the steps: For network connection troubleshooting, suspend the access points of your router and device, turn off and turn on the Wi-Fi connection, forget the network and connect it again or use a new network connection.

For Disabling ADDS recovery feature (TPM recovery in ADDS), here are the steps:

Step 1: Launch ‘Run utility’ by clicking the windows key+ R on your keyboard, and in the command box, type ‘Regedit.’ Click ‘enter; to continue.

Step 2: In the next window, locate the following command:

‘Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\TPM.’

Step 3: Double-click the active directory backup option and set the data value to ‘0’. It will disable the policy.

Using a group policy editor for turning the TPM backup off in ADDS can also resolve the error. Here are the steps:

Step 1: Launch ‘run utility’ by following the abovementioned steps, and in the command box, type ‘gpedit.msc’. Click ‘enter’ to continue.

Step 2: In the next window, locate ‘administrative templates’ followed by selecting the option of ‘system’ and ‘TPM services.’

Step 3: Now, in the right panel, click on ‘turn on TPM backup to activate directory domain services.’ Click to check the option of ‘disable’ or ‘not configured.’ Click ‘apply ‘and click ‘ok’ to complete the action.

Clear all keys from TPM Chip

Before considering that a TPM device is physically damaged and replacing it, the last option is to clear all keys from TPM using the windows defender security center utility. This utility will clear the TPM values by removing information from the chip. All data would be deleted, and the chip would be reset to default. Before clearing the keys, back up all data from the TPM chip. Here are the steps to follow to remove the keys.

Step 1: Launch settings from the main menu or press the Windows key + I from the keyboard to launch the settings window.

Step 2: In the settings window, select the option of ‘privacy and security’ followed by choosing the option of ‘windows security’ from the left pane.
