Yahoo! Widgets is a software application that utilizes a JavaScript runtime environment and an XML interpreter to execute small applications known as widgets, making it part of the widget engines class of software. The software comes pre-installed with default widgets such as a weather widget, digital clock, and calendar. Popular downloads include a world timezone clock and webcam viewers. Each widget operates in its own system process, enhancing the overall stability of the application. If a problem arises with a specific widget, it can be shut down without impacting other widgets or the main application. Yahoo! Widgets also features a hotkey function that allows users to quickly bring all open widgets to the front of the desktop, dimming all other applications. Additionally, the software includes a dock that helps users manage their widgets, with options to auto-hide or close the dock entirely for those who prefer not to have it visible at all times. For users' ease, widgets that do not specify images are provided with their screen-shot from the official widget gallery or the default widget icon. The dock includes buttons for closing a widget, showing a widget's preferences, and revealing a widget from the head-up display by simply rolling over with the mouse.
