LogMeIn offers remote access products that utilize a proprietary remote desktop protocol transmitted via SSL. Each remote desktop is equipped with an SSL certificate to ensure secure communication with accessing computers. Access to remote desktops can be achieved through the LogMeIn Ignition stand-alone application or via a web portal. The web portal requires an ActiveX plugin for Internet Explorer or a LogMeIn extension for Firefox or Safari. If those options are not available, Java is required to run a Java program, and if that fails, a "screen-shot-based HTML remote control" is used as a fallback. The service connects the remote desktop and the local computer using SSL over TCP or UDP and employs NAT traversal techniques to establish peer-to-peer connectivity when possible.
