LogMeIn's range of remote access products leverage a proprietary remote desktop protocol that is transmitted via SSL to ensure secure communication. Each remote desktop is equipped with its own SSL certificate to uphold the cryptographic security of communications with the accessing computer. Users can access remote desktops using the LogMeIn Ignition stand-alone application or through a web portal. The web portal supports ActiveX plugin for Internet Explorer, and extensions for Firefox (the LogMeIn plug-in for Firefox) and Safari (the LogMeIn plug-in for Safari). In the absence of these, the web portal can also utilize Java or a "screen-shot-based HTML remote control" as fallback options. The service establishes connections between the remote desktop and the local computer using SSL over TCP or UDP, and leverages NAT traversal techniques to facilitate peer-to-peer connectivity when available.
