Microsoft Flight Simulator X, commonly known as FSX, represents the tenth installment of the renowned line of flight simulators developed by Microsoft. The software introduces a significant graphics engine enhancement, touted by Microsoft as a groundbreaking technological advancement within the series. The release of the software was offered in three distinct editions: Standard, Deluxe, and subsequently Gold. The Deluxe Edition presents an array of supplementary features, including an on-disc software development kit (SDK), three aircrafts equipped with the Garmin G1000 Flightdeck, and the player's ability to function as Air Traffic Control (ATC) for other online users with the use of a radar screen. The Deluxe Edition also encompasses 24 aircrafts, as opposed to the 18 available in the Standard Edition, as well as 45 high-detail airports, 38 high-detail cities, and 51 structured missions, offering an increase in content and variety. Improved graphics highlighted within the software embrace enhanced texture resolution, a new Earth model allowing for polar flights, true road data, region-specific textures, minimal 3D animals, and star constellations. Moreover, the scenery textures have been aligned with the automatically generated (Autogen) buildings. It is worth noting that the software supports a maximum rendering-engine-supported scenery resolution of 7 cm/pixel, although this feature is not available with default scenery.
