About Active Protection System?
The APS provides a protective system for the internal hard drive of the ThinkPad. An internal sensor detects acceleration of the notebook, prompting a software applet to park the hard disk. This advanced feature minimizes the risk of data loss in the event of a dropped notebook by ensuring that the read/write head of the hard drive is parked, reducing the likelihood of a crash onto the platter. In addition to detecting acceleration, the hardware sensor can also, to some extent, detect the notebook's orientation in space relative to the axis of gravity.
