Shareaza MediaBar is an application that operates as a browser extension and toolbar. Its primary function is to control the user's browser by altering the search provider and redirecting web searches to affiliated search engines to generate revenue. The toolbar is designed to maximize user clicks on sponsored advertisements through search. Its features include modifying the browser's default home page and search provider, as well as the ability to change the 'new tab' functionality to launch the modified search portal page. Furthermore, Shareaza MediaBar can add alternative error pages, DNS error, and 'page not found' functionality, as well as additional features to protect search and home page settings. It also has the ability to access the HTML of visited pages, capture URLs of pages and search terms, and inject advertising in the form of context ads, pop-ups, and pop-unders in some cases.
