ATI AVIVO Codecs

ATI Avivo is a suite of hardware and low-level software features that can be found on the ATI Radeon R520 family of GPUs and all subsequent ATI Radeon products. Its purpose is to offload video decoding, encoding, and post-processing tasks from a computer's CPU to a compatible GPU. When using player and decoder software that support ATI Avivo, compatible GPUs experience decreased CPU usage. During video capturing, ATI Avivo enhances the source, automatically adjusting its brightness and contrast. The technology incorporates a 12-bit transform to minimize data loss during conversion and utilizes motion adaptive 3D comb filter, automatic color control, automatic gain control, hardware noise reduction, and edge enhancement technologies to improve video playback quality. In video decoding, the GPU core provides hardware decoding support for H.264, VC-1, WMV9, and MPEG-2 videos, which effectively reduces CPU utilization (bitstream processing/entropy decoding still requires CPU processing). ATI Avivo also supports vector adaptive de-interlacing and video scaling to minimize visual artifacts, as well as spatial/temporal dithering to simulate 10-bit color quality on 8-bit and 6-bit displays. These features make ATI Avivo an essential component for achieving high-quality video playback and efficient processing on compatible ATI Radeon GPUs.
